Q: Can I change the metal plate external dimensions to a different size from the standard sizes on the price list?

A: Yes. For instance, if an original photo is in a square format such as 6x6 medium format, and if you want a square form corresponding to the original, or if an original photo is a landscape format and if you want a long and narrow shape corresponding to the original, we can accept such change requests, and will give you a price quote. Also, the aspect ratio of films and image data differs depending on the cameras used, and we change sizes slightly depending on the photo so that we can show the entire image of the original photo without cutting off sides, and so that the margins of the four sides will be almost the same. Please consider that the sizes on the price list are representative ones.

Q: Can you customize the shape?

A: We may be able to do this, depending on the request. We may not be able to accept certain requests cannot be accepted due to technical reasons.

Q: Can you narrow margins to make the photo larger?

A: Yes, we can. The sample illustration image size is an example. You can change the size of the image and aspect ratio as you like. The sample illustration has margins which are generally considered to have good balance. We can narrow or widen margins while keeping the plate size almost the same, and make image larger or smaller.

Q: Can you remove margins surrounding the image?

A: It is possible with the flat type, floating type and tabletop type. Please refer to cut-off the details.

Q: What is the smallest text size?

A: It depends on the boldness of the text, but we can accept up to about 9 points in sans-serif font. However, the caving depth of the letters will be shallow.

Q: How many letters can put on an image if I want to engrave a long sentence?

A: If the text is engraved in about 9-point font on the back surface, it is possible to fit about 8,000 letters for the flat type in 250 × 330 size. We recommend a slightly larger text size, considering the ease of reading the text. For long sentences, please send the original text with an email with the text pasted in the message body, or in a Word file.

Q: Can I choose the fonts to engrave text in?

A: The standard fonts are Goudy Oldstyle Roman or Frutiger LT Std 55; however, you can change these to Bold. Please see examples of fonts here. Since we also have other fonts available than these samples, we will choose one in accordance with your wishes. If you choose from fonts which we have, there will be no extra charge no matter how many times you change the font.

If you want to use a font which you have but we do not have, you can provide us with a file outlined in Adobe Illustrator (any edition is acceptable), and we can use it directly. It is also fine to print the font out on paper.

If you want to use a font which we do not have, and if you cannot prepare outlined data, we can handle such a request by obtaining font data by requesting it from another company; however, you will need to pay an extra charge.

However, please understand that, in any case, font styles will be slightly changed by engraving process. Since serif fonts have thin horizontal lines, they can become unbalanced, or lines may disappear with small letter sizes. Therefore, we recommend sans-serif if you want small letters.

Q: Can you insert hand-written text or hand-drawn illustrations?

A: Yes, we can. Drawings are acceptable for illustrations. An acceptable drawing should be black and white, not half-tone gray, and have clear contrast.

Please send drawings to us either on paper by post, or send scanned data through the internet or in the form of media such as CD-R.

If you are not familiar with how to send data, it may be safer to send paper.

Q: Can you insert a handprint?

A: Yes, we can. We can insert it on either front or back side upon request. We can insert a child’s handprint either in the original size or a smaller size. Please send it in paper or electronic form.

Q: Can you insert two photos in a Millennium Photo or Stainless Photo?

A: We can do it; however, you might be charged an additional charge in the case of a Millennium Photo. There is no additional charge in the case of a Stainless Photo.

Also, since doing this makes the photo smaller, we tend to not recommend this.

Q: Can you add designs to a photo, such as making the frame have a rounded shape, or using faded lines in a melting-like effect?

A: Yes, we can. There is no additional charge for the photo processing.

Q: Can you cut persons out of photos?

A: Yes, we can. There is no additional charge for the photo processing.

Q: There are many things in the photo around the subject to be processed - can you make the background blurred?

A: Yes, we can. However, since it will be portrayed with lines for a Millennium Photo or Stainless Photo, the impression might look different than the blurred effect in an ordinary photo.

Q: Can you change the clothes of a subject to formal dress?

A: We can do it if you provide the photo of the clothes. We can perform composition processing; however, we cannot create things not taken as photos. If you would like us to change the contents of a photo, please provide us with additional photos showing the clothes.

Q: Can you remove wrinkles, make someone’s face expression brighter or make someone thinner?

A: We can do this to some degree; however, since if we did this too much, it would be unnatural, we recommend doing this moderately.

Q: Since the subject’s face is slanting, can you straighten it?

A: It is possible to correct the face slant by tilting the entire photo. In this case, we would need to cut the surrounding image a bit.

Correcting the slant above the neck only while leaving the shoulder and left side unchanged, or correcting the head slant only while leaving the neck unchanged is possible in some images; however, in some cases the joint parts or the entire image may look somehow unnatural.

In the latter case, we will ask you to firstly check a finishing sample paper on which the slant is corrected, and after getting your approval, we will produce the actual processed finishing sample paper and ship it to you. Due to this two-step checking process, the production will take longer than normal.

There will be no extra charge for slant correction, and we will do it within the standard price.

Q: Can you put an image onto a lighter or mobile device?

A: It would be a risk to put an image onto a ready-made product. In particular, we cannot process on goods with movable parts or electric appliances in principle. Since we perform mechanical processing and chemical processing, it is possible that the product will break.

It may be possible to perform such processing if the item does not have any movable parts and is simple. However, if the processing dimensions are small (such as for a stainless steel kitchen knife), the grooves will be thick compared to the overall size, and the finishing will looks rougher. Better effects can be expected with large items such as doors.

Processing in such cases is subject to your acceptance that the item value may be impacted by unpredictable accidental damage. Please ask us for details.

Q: Can you perform processing on a round surface, such as a metal mug cup?

A: Basically we do not do this. Sandblast processing can be used on round surfaces such as glass side at relatively low cost, therefore, this may be something to consider.

Q: Is the photo located in the center of the plate?

A: Basically we equalize the margins on the four sides, and locate the photo centered from all four sides.

However, some images can appear a bit lower when equalizing the top and bottom margin and placing the photo image centered between the top and bottom of the plate. Therefore, we can narrow the top margin slightly more than the bottom margin and place the image slightly higher upon request.

Q: Can you move the photo position significantly from the center of the plate?

A: If you specify it, we will create unequal four side margins for an asymmetric design.

If there is text included on the front of the product, we generally move the photo above the text and position letters on the bottom margin; however, you can change this positioning if you wish.

Q: How thick in millimeters is the plate?

A: Officially we use 1.5 mm plates. In fact, plates get slightly thinner during the polishing process, and end up about 1.4 mm. The plate thickness differs depending on the lots. We do not publically disclose a precise tolerance. Please refer her for details.

Q: Can you change the plate thickness?

A: It would be a special order. Since it would require a long delivery time and would be somewhat more expensive, we do not recommend this. Since 1 mm plate may deform, and since 3 mm is too heavy, 1.5 mm is generally the best. If you need a thick plate for a special use, we can offer 5 mm, 10 mm and thicker sizes. Please ask us for a quote.
